Chelsea Football Club has announced the signing of Monaco defender Axel Disasi for a fee of £39 million. The 23-year-old centre-back is set to step straight into the first team at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea look to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season.
Disasi, who has signed a five-year deal with the London club, impressed during his two seasons with Monaco in Ligue 1. He made a total of 71 appearances for the French side, scoring four goals and helping them to a third-place finish last season.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel spoke highly of Disasi’s qualities as a defender, saying: “We are very pleased to welcome Axel to the club. He is a strong, physical defender with good technical ability and is comfortable playing in both a back three and a back four. He has shown his quality in Ligue 1 and we believe he has the potential to become an important player for us.”
Disasi expressed his excitement at joining the Premier League club, saying: “I am delighted to be joining Chelsea. It is a dream come true for me to play for such a prestigious club and I am looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Premier League. I can’t wait to get started and help the team achieve success.”
The signing of Disasi adds to Chelsea’s already impressive defensive options, with the likes of Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, and Andreas Christensen also vying for a place in the starting lineup. Chelsea will be hoping that their strengthened defence can help them challenge for the Premier League title this season, after finishing fourth last campaign.
The transfer window is still open, and it remains to be seen if Chelsea will make any further signings before the start of the season. However, the addition of Disasi is certainly a promising start for the London club, as they look to build on their recent success under Tuchel.
