Bryanna Field, an American photographer, captured and compared two photos of a newborn taken shortly after birth and a few hours later to showcase the incredible transformation that occurs in babies in such a short timeframe.

In the first photo, the baby girl‘s face is contorted, covered in vernix caseosa, a yellowish fluid that protects the skin during fetal development and birth.

The second photo, taken just an hour after birth, shows a remarkable change in the baby’s appearance. Field hopes that the contrast between the two photos will appeal to internet users and reminds parents that it is normal for infants not to be perfect at birth.

“While many parents hope for a perfect baby at birth, it’s important to remember that it’s far from reality, and there’s nothing dramatic about that,” explains the photographer.
