Yesterday’s deadly earthquakes struck not only Turkey, but also Syria, where rescue crews have been present from the very beginning, waging a superhuman battle to free citizens from the debris.

Amidst the wreckage, a team of rescuers made a shocking discovery – a newborn baby girl still alive, with her umbilical cord connected to her deceased mother.

It appears that the woman gave birth while trapped, but neither she nor the rest of her family managed to survive the earthquake.

The little girl arrived at the clinic in critical condition but is now stable and undergoing treatment, according to pediatrician Hani Maarouf. Her survival is the latest in a series of stories of children being pulled from the rubble.

The death toll from the devastating earthquakes in Syria and neighboring Turkey has soared above 5,000 by Tuesday, and rescue crews continue to search through rubble in freezing temperatures in search of survivors.
