Wayne Rooney Advises Mason Greenwood to Leave Manchester United this Summer

Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United striker and club legend, has advised Mason Greenwood to leave the club this summer after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) discontinued his case for attempted rape and assault. Greenwood, who is just 19 years old, has been left in a difficult position and may need to move on to revive his career.

Greenwood burst onto the scene in the 2019/20 season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions and establishing himself as one of the brightest young talents in English football. However, his progress was derailed last year when he was sent home from England’s training camp in Iceland for breaching COVID-19 protocols. Shortly afterward, he was arrested and charged with attempted rape and assault.

The CPS has now dropped the case against Greenwood due to insufficient evidence, but the damage has already been done. Rooney, who played for Manchester United for 13 years and is the club’s all-time leading scorer, believes that Greenwood needs a fresh start to get his career back on track.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Rooney said, “For Greenwood, I think he needs to get out of Manchester for a bit, let him go and play somewhere else, and then maybe come back in a couple of years’ time.” Rooney added that Greenwood is “stuck” at Manchester United and needs to be playing regular football to develop as a player.

Rooney’s advice may be hard to swallow for Greenwood, who has been at Manchester United since the age of six and is a product of the club’s academy system. However, with the signing of Jadon Sancho and the emergence of other young forwards such as Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga, Greenwood’s opportunities may be limited next season.

Moving to another club could be the best option for Greenwood at this stage of his career. He is still a highly rated talent with a lot of potential, and a move to a new environment could help him to rediscover his form and confidence.

Manchester United may not want to sell Greenwood, but if the player himself feels that he needs a fresh start, the club may have no choice but to let him go. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the young striker, but one thing is clear: he needs to be playing regular football if he is to fulfill his potential.
